Saint Gregory the Great

Saint of the Day- Saint Gregory the Great, pope, doctor of the Church 

Saint Gregory the Great was born in the year 540 in Rome to a noble family. Gregory was well educated and very smart, and became an expert in law. He excelled so much that he became prefect of Rome, he was only 33. After his father died, Gregory had the family villa in Rome converted into a monastery. In 590, Pope Pelagius II died, and Gregory became the pope even though he didn't want to. Pope Gregory made many changes of the mass that still remain today and also create plainchant. He was also know for givnig alms for the poor, he donated everything from money to land to the poor. He lived a great life of poverty and charity, he died on March 12, 604 and he is the parton saint of musicians, singers, students, and teachers.

Saint Peter Claver

Saint of the Day- Saint Peter Claver, priest

St. Peter Claver was born in Verdu, Catalonia, Spain, in 1580. He studied at the Jesuit college of Barcelona, entered the Jesuit novitiate at Tarragona in 1602. While studying philosphy at Majorca, Peter was influenced by Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez to go to the Indies. In 1610, he went to Cartagena the principle slave market. After his ordination in 1616, he decidicated himself to serve the Negro slaves. He worked for the freeing of the slaves and the abolition of the Negro slave trade. He would board the slave ships to care for the sick and provided food and water. He died in 1654 and he is the patron saint of negro missions.

Saint John Chrysostom

Saint of the Day- Saint John Chrysostom, bishop, doctor of the Church 

Saint John Chrysostom was born into a Christian familly in 344 in Antioch. He studied rhetoric under a pagan named Libanius. He began to life as an anchorite in the mountains near Antioch, but due to his poor health he had to return to Aniotch, where he was ordained a priest. In 398, he was raised to the See of Constantinople and he became on of the greatest lights in the church. But because of this he had many enemies, his most powerful enemy was the empress Eudoxia. Several accusations were brought against him during a councel. He was sent to exile. Even though he suffered so much it wasn't enough for his enemies, they banished him even further, to Pythius. He died on the way there on September 14, 407. He is the patron saint of Constantinople, education, epilepsy, lecturers, orators, and preachers.

Saint Cyprian

Saint of the Day- Saint Cyprain, bishop, martyr

Saint Cryprain was born around in the 3rd century in Norht Africa, he received educatuon there. Shortly after he converted into Christianity, he became the bishop of Carthage in 249. He built a great reputaion for being holy and pious. He died in the year 258 and he is the patron saint of Necromancers.

Saint Cornelius

Saint of the Day- Saint Cornelius, pope, martyr 

Saint Cornelius was a Roman priest who was born in Rome. He was elected a bishop during the persecution of the Christians under Emperor Decius. When the Christian percecution resumed in 253, Corniuelius was exiled  Centumcellae, where he died either from hardships or decapitation, and was the patron sainyt of earache, epilepsy, fever, twitching, cattle and domestic animals.

Saint Robert Bellarmine

Saint of the Day- Saint Robert Bellarmine 

Saint Robert Bellarmaine was born on October 4, 1542 in Montepulciano, Italy. He entered the newly formed Society of Jesus in 1560. After he was ordained he went out to teach at Louvain, where he was famous for his Latin sermons. In 1576, he was appointed tio the Chair  controversial theology at the Roman College. He became Provfincal of Naples and in 1594 and Cardinal in 1598. He created an apologetic work against the heretics. He died in 1621 and he is the patro saint of Catechists and catechumens.

Saint Januarius

Saint of the Day- Saint Januarius, bishop, martyr

Saint Janius was born in Italy and was appointed the bishop of Benevento during the Emperor Diocletion persecution. He would visit two deacons and two laymen in prison. Because of the persecution he was also sent to prison. They were thrown with wild beasts, but when the beasts didnt attacked them they were beheaded. He is the patron saaint of blood banks, Naples, volcanic eruptions, and Tilbury.

Saint Kim Taegon

Saint of the Day- Kim Taegon, priest, martyr

Saint Kim Taegon was the first Korean-born priest and tried spreading christianity in Korea during the mid-1840. He was baptized at the age of 15 and studied in Macau and the Phillipines. After his ordination in Shanghai in 1844 he served the church for only two years before suffering martyrdom. Kim was one the thousand Christians who were executed during the Joseon Dynasty. He was tortured and beheaded in 1846. He is the patron saint of Korean clergy.

SAINT MATTHEW

Saint of the Day- SAINT MATTHEW, APOSTLE, EVANGELIST

Before being one of Jesus' dicuiples he was a tax collector which was a hated profession in those times. According the Gospels, Matthew was working at a collection booth when Jesus asked him to follow him. Many years after the death of Christ, he started writing the stories and teachings of Christ. Not much is known of Matthews death. He is the patron saint of bankers.

Saint Padre Pio

Saint of the Day- Saint Padre Pio (Saint Pius of Pietrelcina), priest 


Saint Padre Pio was born on May 25, 1887 in in Pietrelcina, Italy. As a very young child he was religous and at the age of 5 he decided to dedicate his life to the Lord. Because of his young age, had the ability to see guardian angels, and he could speak with Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Although his family was very religous, they were quite poor so he had to work, because of this he couldn't go to school regularly. After three years of schooling, Pio told his parents that he wanted to be a friar. When his parents took him to a nearby community of monks, they told him he needed more education. His Parents decided to hire a private tutor, to pay for the cost. Pio went to America to get a job and sent the money to his home. At the age of 15 he was ready to enter the novitiate of the Capuchin friars at Morcone. When Pio was 17 he fell very ill, he was sent to the mountains for better air but it didn't help him. He was sent home but still continued to study for priesthood. He was ordained a priest in 1910, but still had to remain at home becasue of his poor health. One day, Padre Pio was giving confessions and all of a sudden he started feeling a great pain in his hands and feet. By 1919 many people knew about Padre Pio's stigmas. The Vatican began letting Pio do public duties. Pio used his popularity to build a hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. Padre Pio became famous for his charity and piety. He died on September 23, 1968, over 100,000 came to his funeral. He is the patron saint of Civil defense volunteers, adolescents, Pietrelcina, stress relief, & January blues.

Saint Cosmas and Damian

Saint Cosmas and Damian were born in in Cilicia, which is now in Turkey. They were famous pharmacists in Ayas, Adana, a Roman province in Syria. Christian persecution by Diocletian affected Cosmas and Damian. Lysias, the Cilicia governor, ordered them arrested. They were beaten and tortured before being beheaded with Leontius, Anthimus, and Eutropius in 283. Because they were so skilled with medicine they are the patron saints of physicians, surgeons, veterinarians, orpahnges, and protectors of children.

Saint Vincent de Paul

Saint Vincent de Paul was born on April 24, 1581, he was the founder the Congregation of the Mission. He preached missions to peasants. St. Vincent de Paul is primarily recognized for his charity and compassion for the poor. He died September 27, 1660 and is the patron saint of charitable societies.

Saint Wenceslaus

Saint Wenceslaus was born near Pargue and he was the son of Duke Wratislaw. His grandmother, Saint Ludmila taught him Christianity. The Magyars and Drahomira murdered the Duke and St. Lumila, and took over the kingdom. Wenceslaus was annouced the new ruler in 922. He encouraged Christianity. When his son was born, he joined a group of noble Czech dissenters. They invited him to religous fesival, where they trapped and killed him on the way to mass. He is the patron saint of of Bohemia, Czech state, Prague.

Saint Jerome

Saint Jerome was born around 342 AD, in Stridon, Dalmatia. Jerome was educated by Aelius Donatus. At around the age of 12 he traveled to Rome to study grammar, philosophy and rhetoric. He quickly forgot his morals and pursued pleasure instead of studies. He was lost in the darkness of pleasures but he just couldn't see how to be free. Fortunatley, he met Bonosus, a Christian influence. In 366 he became Christian and baptized. Saint Jerome is known for his latin translation of the bible. He became a priest and was the secretary to Pope Damasus I and in 389 esstablished a monostary at Behtlehem. His biblical, ascetical, monastic, and theological works greatly influenced the middle ages. He died in 419/420 in Bethlehem, Palestine, he is the patron saint of archaeologists, Biblical scholars, librarians, students and translators.
